Allergies, Dietary Restrictions and Safety

Q. Is Silk Pure Almond almondmilk okay for people with wheat and gluten allergies?

A. We do not make our products using any wheat, wheat gluten, rye, oat, barley or malt ingredients. Our facilities do not handle or receive these ingredients in their operations so we would not expect the presence of them in our products. However, at this time we do not conduct the tests that would allow us to label our products as gluten-free. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Q. Can I drink Silk Pure Almond almondmilk products if I am allergic to dairy?

A. All Silk Pure Almond almondmilk products are dairy-free, lactose-free and casein-free, and can be suitable for people with dairy allergies. A dairy allergy is an extreme sensitivity to the proteins in dairy products and should not be confused with lactose intolerance. Dairy allergies can range from mild indigestion to anaphylaxis, which is an acute reaction. Lactose intolerance is difficulty digesting the naturally occurring sugar in milk, which can cause stomach discomfort. We have extensive testing protocols in place at our facilities to detect and prevent contamination by dairy components. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Q. Can I drink Silk Pure Almond almondmilk if I am lactose intolerant?

A. Absolutely, because all Silk products are naturally lactose-free.

Q. Can people who are allergic to nuts other than almonds drink Silk Pure Almond almondmilk?

A. We do not make our products using any other nuts. Silk Pure Almond almondmilk may be processed on equipment that also makes our Silk Pure Coconut coconutmilk, so we have included a note on the label that it may contain coconuts. Consumer safety is our highest priority. To help ensure against the risk of unintentional contamination, complete allergen cleanup procedures are standard in our facilities. We have testing protocols in place and we utilize hardware and software to prevent ingredient commingling. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Q. Can Silk Pure Almond almondmilk be used as infant formula?

A. No, there are no replacements for breast milk or infant formula.

Q. Can children consume Silk Pure Almond almondmilk?

A. We recommend checking with your pediatrician about the best diet for your child.

Q. Can pregnant women consume Silk Pure Almond almondmilk?

A. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to discuss any food and nutrition questions with your doctor.

Nutrition

Q. What are the nutritional benefits of Silk Pure Almond almondmilk?

A. Silk Pure Almond almondmilk is a refreshing, delicious and versatile choice for a healthy lifestyle.

Q. What exactly are antioxidants, and how do they work?

A. Antioxidants are nutrients that occur naturally in many foods including nuts, fruits, vegetables and soy. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that accompanies normal processes in the body. When oxidation occurs, it releases potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals. Excessive free radical production is thought to cause oxidative damage, a phenomenon that may contribute to aging and a number of chronic health problems including cancer and cardiovascular disease. A growing body of research indicates that consuming foods with antioxidant properties may help combat free radicals and protect against oxidative damage, supporting overall good health.3,4,5,6

Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that has been studied for its role in supporting normal heart and brain function (and in promoting a healthy complexion).7,8,9 Each serving of Silk Pure Almond almondmilk provides 50 percent of the recommended daily value of this essential nutrient.

Q. What extra antioxidants are in Silk Pure Almond Dark Chocolate almondmilk?

A. Silk Pure Almond Dark Chocolate almondmilk contains 35% of the daily value for antioxidant vitamin C and, like other Silk almondmilk flavors, 50% of the daily value for antioxidant vitamin E.

Ingredients and Processing

Q. Where do the almonds used in Silk Pure Almond almondmilk come from?

A. All of the almonds used in our almondmilk are grown in the United States, which is the world's largest producer of almonds.

Q. Is Silk Pure Almond almondmilk natural?

A. Yes. It is produced without artificial ingredients and meets the same high standards of quality and integrity as the rest of the Silk product line. We keep processing to a minimum, beginning with whole, all natural almonds. The nuts are lightly roasted and ground to produce creamy almond butter. Then we blend in filtered water, natural sweetener, natural flavorings, vitamins and minerals. (Pure Almond Unsweetened contains no added sugar or sweeteners.) In addition, Silk Pure Almond almondmilk is certified by the Non-GMO Project, the nation's first system designed to test whether a product's ingredients have met defined standards for the absence of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

Q. What are GMOs?

A. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been created using the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Q. What is the Non-GMO Project?

A. The Non-GMO Project is a nonprofit collaboration of stakeholders in the natural products industry--including manufacturers, retailers, farmers and consumers--dedicated to the shared mission of ensuring the availability of non-GMO food and beverage choices.

Q. Are Silk Pure Almond products pasteurized?

A. Yes, we use ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurization to ensure that all of our products are free of harmful microorganisms.

Q. Does Silk Pure Almond almondmilk contain caffeine?

A. Silk Pure Almond Dark Chocolate almondmilk is the only flavor with caffeine. It contains about 3.5 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce serving. All other flavors are caffeine-free. As a comparison, one cup of regular coffee contains 115 to 175 mg of caffeine and one cup of decaf coffee contains 3 to 4 mg.

Q. Does Silk Pure Almond almondmilk contain any animal products or by-products?

A. There are no animal products, by-products or derivatives in our products, making them completely vegan. All vitamins used to fortify Silk products are vegetable-derived. The source for the calcium in Silk Pure Almond almondmilk is natural limestone.

Q. How is Silk Pure Almond almondmilk sweetened?

A. We use all natural evaporated cane juice, which is produced by pressing the juice out of sugar cane stalks. The juice is evaporated to form sugar crystals. These crystals are then milled once to give them an even texture. Evaporated cane juice requires less processing than refined sugar. Silk Pure Almond Unsweetened almondmilk contains no sweeteners or added sugars and has only 35 calories per 8-ounce serving.

Q. Are Silk Pure Almond products kosher?

A. All Silk Pure Almond products are certified Kosher OU-D. This means that our dairy-free products may have been processed on equipment also used for dairy. It does not indicate the presence of dairy components in the products. We have extensive protocols in place at our facilities to detect and prevent contamination by dairy components.

Freshness, Storage and Packaging

Q. How long will Silk Pure Almond almondmilk products stay fresh?

A. Unopened refrigerated Silk Pure Almond almondmilk will stay fresh in your refrigerator until the date stamped on the top of the carton. Once opened, it should remain refrigerated and consumed within seven to ten days. It is not unusual for our almondmilk to remain good past the ten-day mark; however, we only guarantee that it will be good for seven to ten days once opened.

Shelf-stable Silk Pure Almond almondmilk does not need to be refrigerated until it has been opened. This makes it a good choice for stocking your pantry or taking on a trip. It will stay fresh unopened until the date stamped on the carton, usually up to eight months from the date of purchase. Once opened, shelf-stable Silk Pure Almond almondmilk ages just like our refrigerated almondmilk: it must remain refrigerated to stay fresh for seven to ten days.

Q. Can I freeze Silk Pure Almond almondmilk?

A. We do not recommend freezing Silk Pure Almond almondmilk for storage. Although freezing does not affect the safety or nutritional value of the product, Silk Pure Almond almondmilk changes in texture dramatically when it is thawed. Our almondmilk does perform well in frozen-dessert recipes such as almondmilk ice cream.

Q. Are the cartons recyclable?

A. The availability of recycling facilities to process our half-gallon cartons and shelf-stable quarts varies from one community to another. If our packages are not being recycled in your community, we urge you to encourage your local recycling center to expand their efforts.
